A Behaviour Chain Analysis is a tool or strategy we use in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to work out where things went wrong, e.g., when a patient behaved negatively.

Often patients will say that they cannot remember what happened to cause them to lose their temper after something triggered them. A chain analysis will look at all the things that happened, including the things that made the patient more vulnerable to act impulsively and the consequences.

Identify the appropriate DBT skills that could stop the whole chain.

Have a look at this PDF describing the DBT chain analysis in detail.
